Project Lifecycle

Project Reviewing

All NHR normal and large project proposals are reviewed by the multi-disciplinary Steering Committee of Baden-Württemberg and for large projects additionally by the NHR Steering Committee. Projects are marked as preliminary until the review phase is over. During this time a principal investigator can already add contributors to the project (see the Manage project contributors chapter), and the project members are able to use HoreKa.

While a project is in the reviewing phase (preliminary state), usage is limited to 500,000 CPU compute hours and 5000 GPU hours. In the rare case of a long reviewing phase a higher fraction of the requested computing resources will be granted on an individual base. The full amount of granted resources becomes available as soon as the project will have been approved by the Steering Committee of Baden-Württemberg and for NHR large projects also by the NHR Steering Committee.

Should the steering committee decline a project proposal, the associated accounts will lose access to HoreKa and no further computation is possible.

Project End (Deprovision)

As soon as the project ends the CPU and GPU compute hours will be zeroed so you will not be able to use it anymore.

Data deletion notice

Note carefully that your data will be kept for ONLY three months. We kindly ask you to either download it or keep it safe before the three months period. Afterwards, we will delete your data and all the files of your project will be LOST. In addition, your home directory will be deleted if you don't have any further projects. In cases you have still active projects, the home directory will change to one of your new active projects. The home directory prompt and path will change which could affect some scripts, so kindly, make sure that you update all the scripts that you need.

In case you have an extendable project and would like to extend it, see "Project extension" for more details. Note that at the end of the project, all unused resources are lost. The newly granted resources will be added to the consumed resources (in case of extension).

Annual Reports

Please be aware, that we require annual project reports for normal and large projects. There is no template for this report. However, we ask you to kindly summarize your most relevant findings and the project itself. Please upload it to JARDS or send it directly to us via mail (project-review@nhr.kit.edu).

Project Extension

Only NHR normal and large projects can be extended. In general we have two kinds of extensions: short-extension and normal-extension.

Short-Extensions

Short-Extensions do not have to be re-evaluated by the steering committee and includes two options with only one can be chosen (not both):

  • up to 3 months extension applied at the end of the project,
  • up to 25% of the initially granted resources.

In order to apply for a Short-Extension, you can send us an email directly stating which option you want or you can send the request through JARDS.

Normal-Extensions

Normal-Extensions of up to more than 25% of the initially granted resources or up to 1 year, have to be fully re-evaluated by the steering committee, thus you need to apply for an application as an extension in JARDS.

In order to apply for a Normal-Extension, you apply through JARDS.

The decision on project extension is not based on the general scientific eligibility, but rather on a description of the existing results and details and the further course and work plan/achievements of the project. Renewed proof of scalability is not required for project extension, if the complexity of the project and the numerical methods to be used have not changed.

Unused resources

Note that when an extension to a project is approved, all unused resources are lost. The newly granted resources will be added to the consumed resources (in case of extension).

Application of project extension

Project extensions are managed using JARDS. When preparing the extension application, please fill in the template listed above, specifically section 7.

Acknowledgement

Papers, presentations, and other publications that contain results generated by computing resources of the NHR Association should include an appropriate acknowledgment. For detailed information and templates, see the Acknowledgements page.
