Account Registration and Access

Access to all NHR@KIT services is managed through the Federated Login System (FeLS). This platform allows you to use existing accounts from academic institutions worldwide, plus some commercial providers like Google and GitHub.

NHR@KIT resources are fully integrated with Helmholtz ID. You can register with an account from your home institution or even with accounts from Github, Google etc.

All users have to complete the following steps for each individual NHR@KIT service they want to use:

  1. Log into FeLS and look up your account identifier
  2. Get the entitlement that enables the registration for a specific service
  3. Set up two-factor authentication (if not already enabled)
  4. Register for the service on FeLS

Step 1: FeLS Login

FeLS is a federated Identity Management platform that integrates with many academic institutions across Germany and also supports logins via Helmholtz ID.

When accessing FeLS, a list of Home Organizations will be shown. Select the one that corresponds to your account and then click on PROCEED or FORTFAHREN. If your Home Organization is not listed, select Helmholtz ID instead.

After successful login at your Home Organization, you are redirected back to FeLS. If you are accessing FeLS for the first time, a summary screen with all the transmitted account data will be shown. Check that the data is valid and then click on Continue or Weiter.

Project membership required

Your FeLS account must be linked to an existing computing time project. Contact your project principal investigator (PI) to be added to a project before proceeding with service registration.

Step 2: Service Entitlement

Before you can use any of the NHR@KIT services, you have to get the permission to do so.

  • HoreKa 2: You have to be a member of an existing computing time project that is either in the Preliminary Phase or has been fully accepted.

  • HAICORE: Access requires a small project proposal. See Project Management for details.

  • Future Technologies Partition (FTP): Members of existing HoreKa computing time projects automatically have access. Users without a computing time project can also request access by contacting the support channels.

  • bwUniCluster 3.0: Mentioned for completeness only. This service is part of bwHPC, not NHR. Please refer to the documentation on the bwHPC Wiki.

  • Jupyter: There is no separate registration for Jupyter. See Jupyter Logging In section for entry points.

Step 3: Two-Factor Authentication

All NHR@KIT services require two-factor authentication (2FA). See the Login page for setup instructions.

Step 4: Service Registration

After you have been issued an entitlement, the respective service will show up on FeLS and you can register for it.

On the FeLS home screen you can find a list of all services you currently have access to. Click on Register / Registrieren to start the registration process.

If the requirements for using the service are not met, a corresponding message will be shown at the top of the page. If you have questions, please contact the support channels.

Read the Terms of Use, check the box besides I have read and accepted the terms of use and click on Register or Registrieren.

Set a service password and click on Save or Speichern. Use a strong password that is different from any other password you are currently using.
